Wislain and his Mom

Description

Watercolor, 8x10. Sold to benefit Partners in Development (www.pidonline.org).

When Wislain came to the Partners in Development clinic in the summer of 2012, he was extremely malnourished. He was 7 months old and weighed 9 pounds. He has down's syndrome and had a few heart problems as well. We weren't sure if he was going to make it. We put him in our nutrition program, and his mom brought him in every day for nutritious "medika mamba" cookies, which helped him gain weight and slowly brought him back to health. His mom has no job and was raising him and her other 2 kids pretty much on her own. They lived in a small, chest-high one-room shack made of sticks and other scraps on borrowed land. When they were kicked off the borrowed land and their shack torn down, PID gave them an emergency house to live in. This picture shows Wislain's mom, so proud of her healthy son, in front of the door to her new home.

i just caught myself having a tear in my eyes, when i read your comment and description of the hut - although i know that so many of these things are going on in the world, i still i cannot really imagine how this can be...

love your picture, i see the great care in you, and i see the humble proudness in the mother - so well captured, thank you for sharing... :D

i myself live from social welfare, and some people might look down at me: a poor man - almost everyday at some point i get aware, that i am in fact a very rich man - i have a healthy daughter, she goes to a good school, i live in a house with a garden that my father bought some years ago, i am a musician, i have instruments and a band in which i play - i wouldn´t want to swap with any king in the world!!!

i make a bookmark now - i´ll come back to further explore your gallery, the thumbnails i see are very promising...
